House of Refuge Sunnyslope, Inc.

House of Refuge Sunnyslope, Inc. (HRS) began in 1988 as a ministry to help the homeless with overnight accommodations.  The ministry has grown from six beds to providing transitional housing for approximately 83 individuals.  We have three housing programs for working individuals:   a men’s program for 39 men, a women’s program for 12 women, and a program for single mothers and their children for 12 families which includes up to 25 children.

Our main focus is to provide a safe and sober living environment that can restore men and women through full-time work, Bible study, and fellowship with others.  Residents may live here from 12 to 24 months, must obtain full-time work, and are required to attend Bible studies.  We value accountability, integrity, self-sufficiency, and spiritual well-being.

In 2018 God was at work in a mighty way; we housed 184 residents (including 26 children), 60% of qualified residents left with a financial safety net, 35 residents received life changing dental, vision, and education benefits.  In addition, we delivered 504 evening classes, processed 182 tons of donated food in our food bank kitchen, and had over 12,000 volunteer hours.

Our vision – Through the power and love of Jesus Christ, we are here to encourage, equip, and help transform our residents into the healthy, productive men and women God intended them to be.

Goals:

  • Greatly reduce a mortgage on a recently purchased and renovated property. This expanded our single mom’s program and provided safe, life changing housing for three additional single moms and 15 children.
  • Provide dental work for our residents, many of whom have poor oral health due to years of homelessness and/or addiction.
