In 1999, friends of John F. Howerton and Clarice Maben established the Howerton-Maben Scholarship at Grand Canyon University. John Howerton and Clarice Maben were two long serving professors of history and social studies at Grand Canyon University. The scholarship benefits history majors at GCU.
John F. Howerton
Reverend Dr. John Franklin Howerton (1929-2009) served in the Marine Corps for 8 years. Later, he was a pastor at several small churches in Arizona and Missouri. He became a professor of history at Grand Canyon College in 1965 where he taught for 30 years until his retirement.
Clarice Maben
Clarice Maben (1913-2003) served in WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in the Navy during World War II. In 1949, she became a founding member of the faculty, staff and student body of Grand Canyon College. For over 25 years, she taught a variety of courses, including history and social studies.
