Dr. William R. Hintze tragically died in November 1977 while serving as President of Grand Canyon College. His wife, Barbara Hintze, and others established the William R. Hintze Memorial Presidential Grant scholarship fund as a memorial to Dr. Hintze.

Similarly, the Alumni Association of Grand Canyon College established the William R. Hintze Alumni Scholarship endowment and contributed to that fund for many years.
